Portable hard drive – A safe bet

The storage capacity of your hard drive whether it is internal or external shrinks as you feed it with data. The faster you move your data, the faster the hard drive becomes full. This comes as no surprise as the size of the files are bigger these days, with people moving to storing video files, photos, music albums and multimedia documents onto the hard drive, there is no wonder that the hard drives are starved for space. If the capacity of your hard drive is not expanded then you may stand to loose valuable information. With the frequent rise in downloads and editing files, the need for an additional hard drive becomes essential. This hard drive should not only act as a data storage device but as a backup device too. Incase of any mishap your data remains safe. For this purpose portable hard drives are the most suitable.

Adding portable hard drives is the most practical solution one can think of. You can also call it external hard drives as they are connected to the computer’s USB port using an USB cable that is located outside the computer. Therefore adding the hard drive and removing it is very simple. The reason why it is called simple is because there is no need to open the CPU and connect the cable directly to the motherboard. Moreover, the external hard drive does not require any external power to function. The drive draws power from the computer. It is a comfortable plug and play device that helps to store and retrieve data at the wink of an eye.

Not just USB ports, there are FireWire compatible portable hard drives that are available in the market. The FireWire 400 or FireWire 800 ports are available in some computers that can use these compatible external hard drives to backup data. Just plug into your system and the extra storage space you always wanted is readily waiting to be used. As the name suggests, portable drives are lightweight and compact and can be carried wherever you go. Some are so compact that it can fit your pocket or your purse. The portable drives come with backup software. This means the portable drive works as your backup device as well. In case, the original file is corrupt you can also retrieve the file from your portable drive within seconds. This means, your work does not suffer.

While buying a portable hard drive, various factors have to be kept in mind. With so many brands available, a buyer gets confused as to which one is suitable for their data storage needs. Big brands are available online with big capacity and quick transfer rate. The hard disks come in 1.8″, 2.5″ and 3.5″. Depending on your needs you can choose one that fits you. Go to the maximum capacity if you have the money to spend. This can save you from hassles of buying new portable drives once the old one is full to its capacity. The buffer or cache size has to be checked; consider buying 16 MB if you have more data to store. Backup and recovery features have to be checked before investing in a drive.
