High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles In UK politics, the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) is the parliamentary party of the Labour Party in Parliament: Labour MPs as a collective body.Commentators on the British Constitution sometimes draw a distinction between the Labour Party (which was created outside Parliament and later achieved office) and the Conservative and Liberal parties (which began as parliamentary factions). Rhodesia Labour Party

Rhodesia Labour Party

$70.1

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Rhodesia Labour Party was a political party which existed in Southern Rhodesia from 1923 until the 1950s. Originally formed on the model of the British Labour Party from trade unions and being especially dominated by railway workers, it formed the main opposition party from 1934 to 1946. The party suffered a catastrophic split during the Second World War and lost all its seats, and a further split over the attitude to the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland ended its involvement in Rhodesian politics. Labour interests were allied to the Responsible Government Association in seeking selfgovernment for the colony. At the 1920 election to the Legislative Council, two of the Responsible Government Association candidates associated with Labour while three Labour candidates and one Independent Labour stood separately. Following the successful referendum in 1922 supporting selfgovernment, Labour supporters made definite attempts to form a party. Author: Surhone, Lambert M./ Tennoe, Mariam T./ Henssonow, Susan F. The Labour Party and the Struggle for Socialism

The Labour Party and the Struggle for Socialism

$42.97

In the seventies the British political system was in deep and growing crisis. The leading political parties appeared unable to offer effective solutions to the major problems which confronted the electorate and the electorate was consequently increasingly alienated from politicians who promised so much and delivered so little. The gap between promise and performance had been a persistent feature of Labour Party politics in particular and with the revival of radicalism within the Labour Party during the 1970s it was the opportune time to re-examine the record of the party and its potential. David Coates offers an important analysis of the Labour Party during this time and its history. He examines the roots of the Party and its development up to 1945 and analyses the performance of the 1945-51 Attlee Governments in depth. He traces developments within the Party in the 1950s and offers one of the first detailed accounts of the performance in office between 1964 and 1970.

New Labour's Pasts: The Labour Party and Its Discontents

New Labour’s Pasts: The Labour Party and Its Discontents

$37.95

Gets behind the clichis to show just what is left of British Labour party ideology and what the future may hold. Best history of labour since 1945 Explains how New Labour grew out of the old Explores in detail the logic of "Labourism," the distinctive outlook of the historical Labour Party. British Culture, class, education, health, the arts, leisure, the economy have all seen seismic shifts since the 1997 election that raised Tony Blair to power. Politically, New Labour has changed the face of Britain. The Labour that rules has distanced itself from the failed Labour of the 70s and 80s, but the core remains. This book views New Labour as a party in continual dialogue with a powerful, remembered past. New Labour claims to speak for the new society Britain is becoming and to be a party attuned to the opportunities of a global economy. But Labour remains gripped by its own past, unable and unwilling to shed its ties to the old Labour party, but determined to avoid the mistakes of which lead to 4 defeats between 1979 and 1992. In New Labour’s Past, James Cronin covers the full history of the party, from its post war triumph, through decades of symbolic leadership against ruthless and organized opposition, finally to the resurgent New Labour of the 90s which finally took Britain into the new millennium. James Cronin is at Boston College.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP; Irish: Pirt Sisialta Daonlathach an Lucht Oibre) is one of the two major nationalist parties in Northern Ireland. During the Troubles, the SDLP was consistently the most popular nationalist party in Northern Ireland, but since the Provisional IRA ceasefire in 1994, it has lost ground to its rival Sinn Fin, which, in 2001, became the more popular of the two parties for the first time. During the Troubles, the party was distinct from Sinn Fin above all in its rejection of violence, in contrast to Sinn Fins support for the IRA. The SDLP is also a social democratic party, and is affiliated to the Socialist International. The partys youth group is SDLP Youth. Through the SDLPs membership of the Party of European Socialists, it is a sister party with social democratic parties throughout Europe, including the Irish Labour Party and British Labour Party, and it is understood the parties have an unspoken electoral agreement. History of the British Labour Party

$125.85

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Labour Party grew out of the trade union movement and socialist political parties of the 19th century, Labour surpassed the Liberal Party as the main opposition to the Conservatives in the early 1920s. It has had several spells in government, first as minority governments under Ramsay MacDonald in 1924 and 192931, then as a junior partner in the wartime coalition from 19401945, and then as a majority government, under Clement Attlee in 194551 and under Harold Wilson in 196470. Labour was in government again in 197479, under Wilson and then James Callaghan, though with a precarious and declining majority. The current national Labour government won a landslide 179 seat majority in the 1997 general election under the leadership of Tony Blair, its first general election victory since October 1974 and the first general election since 1970 in which it had exceeded 40 of the popular vote. The partys large majority in the House of Commons was slightly reduced to 167 in the 2001 general election and more substantially reduced to 66 in 2005. The Labour Party Since 1979

The Labour Party Since 1979

$87.54

The Labour Party since 1979: Crisis and Transformation challenges the claim that Labours only real hope for the future lies in shedding its ideological baggage. It rejects the notion taht the shadow budget was the prime cause of its 1992 defeat and argues that the strategyof seeking an image of responsibility and respectability which under the new leadership has become a paramount concern does not offer the best route forward for the party. The effect of this strategy of abandoning traditional tenets, and adopting a policy profile more to the tastes of its critics in business and the media will be to deprive Labour of its sheetanchor; and even if successful electorally, the price will be that the hopes and aspirations of its supporters will be highly unlikely to be fulfilled. The British Labour Party and Defense

The British Labour Party and Defense

$174.33

This volume examines the evolution of the British Labour Partys defense and security policies since the partys formation in 1900. It concentrates on the last decade, which has witnessed a gradual transformation from unilateral nuclear disarmament and the removal of U.S. nuclear bases from UK soil to retention of the British nuclear deterrent and support for NATOs new nuclear and conventional strategies. The authors examine in detail how defense policy, in particular nuclear disarmament, was Labours Achilles heel in the 1983 and 1987 general elections and how the party fundamentally changed its defense and security policies after its third successive election defeat. Furthermore, changes in the international environment have spurred Labour to reexamine its policies in this area and to realize that these policies would condemn the party to internal opposition. As a result, Labour now has a pragmatic set of defense and security policies relevant to the 1990s, as evidenced by the partys robust position on the Gulf War, its support for Britains nuclear deterrent, and its welcome of the London Declaration following the NATO summit in July 1990. In explaining Labours internal debates in recent years, Bruce George has few peers. He gives a detailed insiders account of the infighting and ideological battles within the Labour Party that will be valuable for anyone interested in knowing how the United Kingdoms foreign policy might change (or remain virtually the same) under nonConservative leadership. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The Socialist Labour Party was a political party in the Republic of Ireland formed under the leadership of Matt Merrigan (Dublin Secretary of the ATGWU) and Noel Browne (TD) in 1977. Another key figure was the radical journalist Brian Trench, now head of the Communications Department at Dublin City University. The founders came from the Liaison Committee of the Labour Left, which in 1975/76 had tried to build the Left Alternative, a coalition of progressive organisations and individuals, aimed at addressing what they saw as the cultural and economic impoverishment of Irish society by the establishment parties of Fianna Fail, and Fine Gael. It had some success in the early 80s with Noel Browne being elected TD in 1981 for Dublin North Central. The SLP regarded itself as highly progressive. The Politics of Marketing the Labour Party

The Labour Party has been using marketing longer than is commonly realized. Leading figures like Morrison, Snowden, Webb, Gaitskell, Benn and Wilson were among those who recognized the importance of imagery and symbolic communication long before the time of Kinnock, Mandelson and Blair. This book traces how the partys political campaigning has developed since its birth and how the increasing use of marketing contributed to the radical restructuring of both the organization and its policies.
