A blue dye is obtained from the leaves of this plant. The leaves produce about 4 – 5% indigo. The stems and leaves increase the phagocytosis of white blood cells and decreases the permeability of the capillaries. The indigo pigment in the leaves is used in the treatment of freckles, pimples, erysipelas, mumps, thrush, epidemic protitis, infantile convulsions and high febrile conditions of children. The leaves and fruits are used in Korea to help protect the liver and to treat burns and food poisoning caused by eating fish. The fruits are antidote and febrifuge. The plant is anti-inflammatory. People with a tendency to rheumatism, arthritis, gout, kidney stones or hyperacidity should take especial caution if including this plant in their diet since it can aggravate their condition. This is a potent 5 to 1 powdered extract, meaning that one gram of extract is equal in potency to 5 grams of herb. This extract is packed in Plum Flower Brand’s nitrogen-flushed, safety-sealed dispenser bottle, a sample of which is pictured above. Plum Flower is one of the most distinguished herb houses in the world. This is a pure herbal product with no additives. Extracted from sulfur-free and chlorine-free herbs for superior quality. Manufactured in a low-temperature water extraction process to preserve herb integrity. Extracted essential oils are replenished for proper potency. Strict quality control testing to ensure microbiological and heavy metal safety. Only powdered herb added to maintain purity (no artificial fillers such as lactose, cellulose or starch used). TLC (Thin-layer Chromatography) tested to guarantee product quality. Plum Flower takes great care to preserve delicate herbal oils, which are first evaporated using either a water or water-alcohol base in a process that never exceeds 100° centigrade. Sealed vacuum chargers precisely control the temperature, ensuring that none of the oils are lost. Cheaper, high-temperature methods are common industry practice, but these tend to burn off the vital oils. The facilities in Lanzhou and Guang Zhou, China, scientifically test each batch of herbs before, during and after the processing to make sure that all the active ingredients are present. Herbs are also tested to ensure that the formulas surpass all FDA guidelines regarding heavy metals. Those herbs exported to the U.S. are voluntarily submitted to the FDA for approval. Finally, batches are regularly sent out for quality control testing in third-party labs to double-ensure that Plum Flower products are 100% free of pharmaceuticals, preservatives and dyes. The Lanzhou and Guang Zhou factories are so clean, they are certified by the Australian Government’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (GMP). These standards surpass any of the FDA, and are considered the highest for any government agency in the world.

A blue dye is obtained from the leaves of this plant. The leaves produce about 4 – 5% indigo. The stems and leaves increase the infection-fighting power (phagocytosis) of white blood cells and decreases the permeability of the capillaries. This is Plum Flower brand’s nitrogen-flushed vacuum pack. Plum Flower is one of the most distinguished herb houses in the world. Sulfur Free, Chlorine Free, Aluminum Phosphate Free. Sulfites are used to give herbs the appearance of freshness. As with dried fruit, unsulfured herbs look different than those that are adulterated with preservatives. Herbs that are preservative free are more natural looking and are generally darker. The brightness of the herbs may be appealing, but it indicates the presence of harmful additives. Despite their appearance, unsulfured herbs are more fresh and safer than regular commercially available products. The use of sulfur, chlorine and aluminum phosphate was made unnecessary through the establishment of Plum Flower processing stations in China. Herb harvesters slice and process the herbs fresh, avoiding the need to rehydrate dried herbs later to process. This first step is crucial, as rehydration leads to decomposition and thus the need for preservatives. The herbs are then packed and the packages vacuum-packed, injected with nitrogen, and sealed. The nitrogen process combined with the lack of sulfur treatment inhibits the growth of anaerobic organisms, resulting in safer, higher quality herbs. After opening, store in a cool dry place. The facilities in Lanzhou and Guang Zhou, China, scientifically test each batch of herbs before, during and after the processing to make sure that all the active ingredients are present. Yoko Arimoto, arguably Japan’s most popular expert on home cooking, is famous not only for her simple, healthy recipes, but for her stylish food presentation as well. The author of over 100 best-selling cookbooks in Japanese, Arimoto travels extensively and has homes in London, the Umbria region of Italy, and in both Tokyo and Nagano, Japan. From her experiences entertaining and cooking for all kinds of people, she has gained an understanding of differences in tastes and perspectives, enabling her to add an international flair to her native cuisine. In Simply Japanese, Arimoto presents about 60 recipes divided into several sections: seafood, meat, vegetables, tofu, deep-fried foods, rice and miso soup. The recipes are designed for the home cook — not professional chefs — and most don’t require special ingredients or multiple steps. Rather, they are for creating casual dishes typically eaten in a contemporary Japanese home. Arimoto uses basic ingredients such as soy sauce, sake and nori, all readily available in the U.S.; and emphasizes fresh vegetables and local fish and meats. To liven things up, and to challenge the more adventurous cook, she does include some dishes with more exotic ingredients such as tarako pollock roe and yuzu citrus, found at Asian grocery stores. Methods range from simple procedures like learning to make teriyaki salmon and cornmeal shrimp tempura, to the 20-step process of making tofu from scratch. Each finished dish is shown in a beautiful photo, styled by the author using her own, everyday tableware. The key points of each method are also illustrated in detail with color photos, along with the author’s helpful comments and quick tips. Arimoto provides a full explanation of the Japanese culinary style, from how many dishes are served and the kinds of plates used in the home, to the philosophy of healthy eating. Additional sections cover such topics as essential seasonings, home kitchen equipment and cooking techniques, directions for making dashi stock, and other supplemental information.
