It depends on which fabrics are going to be replaced! I find that all darks on one side and all lights on the other is a rather static look – mixing them up creates much more interest. Having busy prints together takes away from the interest of the print. Good art practice teaches that the maximum contrast of values – lights to darks is more interesting to the human brain then dark on dark or light on light. Our minds cannot process this many different patterns at one time and actually tends to shut down.

Think about the color wheel and deal with opposite colors to create maximum impact. Do analogous colors if you want the photo to be the main focal point of the block.
