Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama does not have the luxury of your average rich housewife, keeping a low profile, double-parking outside the famous boutiques in her SUV or lounging at the poolside with her girlfriends. This is one woman that exemplifies what it is to be the modern and successful black woman of the millennium!
On graduating from Princeton University and Harvard Law School Michelle La Vaughn Robinson’s first job was a position with a law firm where she met her future husband. Her brother is Craig Robinson, the men’s basketball coach at Oregon State University. Today this dynamic woman (born 17.1.1964) is the wife of Barack Obama, whose husband is of paramount concern to her, as well as that of her family including their two well-mannered and disciplined daughters, Malia and Sasha.
Michelle O has always been interested in social change and as an undergraduate at Princeton in the 1980s, spent her free time running a literacy programme for children in their local neighbourhoods.
Michelle Obama listed in Forbes’ most powerful women, the style of the women
Forbes Magazine has recently released a list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women, many of which are also the world’s most stylish women of the day. Michelle Obama was listed as the 40th most powerful women. Since she has received her title as First Lady of the United States, Mrs. Obama has not stepped out of the spotlight, receiving remarkable attention for every word she speaks and every outfit she wears.
The ever glamorous Queen Rania, wife of Jordan’s King Abdullah II, was ranked at 76 on the list. Queen Rania has met up with Mario Testino for a photo shoot for Vanity Fair, and has recently become friends with supermodel Naomi Campbell Hillary Clinton, another former first lady, was placed as the 36th most powerful women today. Hillary, like Michelle, was also in the fashion spotlight during her time as the woman of the White House and still continues to draw attention with her sharp business suits.
These women have used their chic sense of style and fashion to draw the right kind of attention to themselves. They have used their attire as a tool in presenting their beliefs and platforms in many different areas.
Should Michelle have been higher on the list?
Do you think style and fashion can bring power?

Today she is a positive role model who has positively influenced the world of African-Americans, but throughout her life it is obvious that Michelle O is an achiever be it in her career, her stable marriage, mother of two growing girls or as a fashion icon.
In May 2006 Essence magazine listed her 25th amongst the World’s Most Inspiring Women. In July 2007, Vanity Fair listed her amongst their list of the top 10 World’s Best Dressed People. In September 2007 Michelle O was honorary guest at Oprah Winfrey’s Legends Ball, helping pave the way for African American Women.
Again in September 2007 the 02138 Magazine listed her 58th of The Harvard 100, which is a list of the prior year’s most influential Harvard alumni. That year her husband was ranked fourth. In July 2008, exactly a year later, she made a repeat performance in Vanity Fair’s internationally best-dressed list. In 2008 People’s magazine listed her amongst its best-dressed women and Michelle was praised for her “classic and confident” look! Due to her sleek style, she is today a trend setter having been compared to Jacqueline (a.k.a.known as Jacqui O)Kennedy, and for her discipline and decorum, to none other than Barbara Bush.
However, Michelle O’s image is not all about dressing up for the media! US News and World Report blogger, PBS host, as well as Scripps Howard and Bonnie Erbe all argue that her own publicists appear to be feeding on the emphasis of style over substance which is a tragedy because this First Lady is one of great substance.
You may wonder where she gets the energy from to get involved in everything as she does, but obviously “Don’t Procrastinate, Just Designate!” is this powerful and practical woman’s secret. It is extremely demanding to be inundated with invitations as a special guest of society, almost on a daily basis, accepting a glass of wine here and giving a brilliant smile there, able to discuss in depth whatever the project is in hand, How many women of her calibre do you know who find time to work with the homeless in shelters and soup kitchens?
Yes, she does have her own office suite brimming with a personal assistant or two, various secretaries, her own wardrobe team and reliable housekeeper, but knowing Michelle as well as we do it would not surprise us to learn that she probably makes it her business to approve every menu that emanates from the kitchens of the White House; she has even given special instructions that they should buy organic foods! No GM produce for this family. Even the President drew attention when he planted an organic garden and installed beehives on the South Lawn of the White House, thus guaranteeing organic produce and honey to the First Family for their state dinners and official gatherings!
How many women do you know who would give their eyeteeth to swop places with this woman of substance who works 24/7? If you know someone who already works as hard as Michelle Obama then it shouldn’t be long before you see your friend rewarded with a similar position alongside her husband “up there” in society! Everyone knows that behind every successful man stands a good woman, for her price is far above rubies… she rises while it is till night…and giveth meat to her household and a portion to her handmaidens… this old scripture epitomises the list of daily demands on Michelle Obama which is endless.
Few women have any idea how much hard work it entails to be the First Lady of America, a trend setter for the Nation, a mother who has concerns for the future of her daughters while all the time at the back of her mind is the constant fear that the nastiness of presidential politics could suck the idealism out of her husband, leaving him just another soulless, cynical Washington politician.
